Education

The Mudd Partnership team has extensive experience of working both within and for the Education sector.

Jane is a Learning Coach on the MSc in Leadership Practice from Edinburgh Napier's Business School. The course has been developed for NHS Lothian and the content of which is delivered by Harvard Business School.  She is working with a small team of Executives to support their learning towards the achievement of their Masters Degree in the Autumn of 2011.

One of Jane’s first roles, was a national standards and qualifications advisor to employer bodies (now Sector Skills Councils) as an employee of SCOTVEC (now SQA). This meant that she developed an in depth knowledge and understanding of the process of developing and accrediting standards. She also developed an acute understanding of the challenges for employers, of getting involved.

This experience has been useful throughout Jane’s career, in supporting organisations. It has helped to encourage organisations to consider how they ensure they are working to defined standards and optimised solutions for development associated with these.

Whilst at Scottish Enterprise, Jane worked closely with SCOTVEC as the lead liaison for employer bodies developing Modern Apprenticeships, primarily comprised of SVQs. She also formed part of the original team in Scottish Enterprise who developed the strategy for working with the ‘learning industry’.

Strengthening employer engagement with both the Higher and Further Education Sectors

Paul led the development and delivery of a new and progressive Higher Level Skills Strategy on behalf of the Skills for Business Network (SfBn).

The thrust of this initiative was to enable employers covering 89% of the UK workforce to derive better value from the HE sector through the delivery of the right skills for their employees, in the right place and at the right time. The critical success of this activity can be measured by the new and highly productive relationships grown during his tenure between employers and key HE bodies, including Universities UK, The Higher Education Academy and the national funding agencies. In particular, this was keenly demonstrated by a conference held in December 2007, which Paul both lobbied for and organised, that was attended by an unprecedented number of employers and University Vice-Chancellors (+120). This event was addressed by the HE Minister and based on conference outcomes the Government subsequently announced a loosening of controls on central funding to support employers and universities to work together more closely in the future to both develop and deliver more fit-for-purpose work based and flexible higher level skills learning opportunities.

The change outlined, represented a significant shift in Government policy. In tandem with this Paul also led the creation of a new joint strategic skills alliance between the FE Sector and the SfBn, which was launched at the House of Lords, by the Secretary of State, John Denham, in October 2007.
